SQL Server Index is the key solution for most of the performance issues that the T-SQL queries suffer from. It can be used to speed up the data retrieval process from your database tables, by seeking for the requested data in the index itself, rather than scanning the overall table rows.
Speaking for SQL Server, I tend to choose a index size and index fragmentation level at which point I begin performing index maintenance. If an index contains less than 100 pages, I will perform no maintenance. If an index is between 10% and 30% fragmented, I will REORGANIZE the index and UPDATE the statistics.

Fragmented data can cause SQL Server to perform unnecessary data reads, slowing down SQL Server’s performance. It will also update column statistics. If you do a reorganization on a table with a clustered index, any non-clustered indexes on that same table will automatically be rebuilt.
